I’m not a fan of mecha anime (giant fighting robots), but I always keep an open mind. Even though mecha is not a genre I like, the fact a mecha anime even makes this list must show that Suisei no Gargantia has much more to offer than just big ol’ robots, right?
So, what’s it about?
In the distant future, the earth as we know it has changed drastically. What once a planet filled with large land masses has become almost completely ocean. On the oceanic earth, the last remnants of humanity travel around in fleets. One of these fleets is known as Gargantia, which is made up of scavenger ships.
Ledo is a 16-year-old lieutenant and pilot of a super high-tech mecha known as a ‘Chamber’. It is to be expected that his fighting skills, reaction speed and reflexes, quick and decisive thinking and repressed extended social skills are due to the fact that he has likely spent his whole life in the military.
Ledo is a fighter in a galactic war with the survival of humanity on the line. During an intense and key battle, Ledo is cast through space and lands upon the massless earth – a planet he has never been to before. Ledo’s Chamber is picked up by the Gargantia fleet, so Ledo sneaks onboard and assesses the situation from the shadows.
This 13-episode anime is about how Ledo adjusts to his life on the blue planet and how he overcomes his communication barrier with the members of the fleet. It goings without saying, there are also cool robot fights.
What makes Suisei no Gargantia special?
The scenes of the flooded earth and the huge fleets are well-drawn and extremely eye-pleasing.
The anime created its own language. Ledo’s efforts to understand this new language and culture is one of the main themes of Suisei no Gargantia.
As well as a great plot, the anime also intelligent and tense battle scenes.
